Standardization plays a foundational and leading role in promoting high-quality economic and social development. It has increasingly become a critical driver that empowers firms to engage in high-end competition, accelerates industrial transformation and upgrading, and shapes new sources of international competitive advantage. The Chinese government has attached great importance to advancing national standardization and has issued a series of policies to support and guide market actors in this process. For example, the National Standardization Development Outline explicitly affirms the central role of enterprises in standardization activities, and the Enterprise Standardization Promotion Law encourages firms to lead the formulation of various types of standards. As China enters the period of the “15th Five-Year Plan,” the recommendations adopted at the Fourth Plenary Session of the 20th Central Committee repeatedly emphasize the importance of a high-quality standards system, demonstrating that standardization is deeply embedded in the nation’s top-level development agenda. Moreover, standardization is an important mechanism for implementing the Plenum’s directives on modernizing the industrial system, advancing institutional opening-up, and enhancing national governance capacity. Driven by policy support and market demand, China’s standardization practices have continued to deepen, accompanied by rising levels of participation and capability among market entities. As the central actors in standardization, enterprises are shifting from traditional roles as standard implementers to increasingly active roles as standard setters. Thus, the economic and social value generated by enterprise-led standardization is a focal point of interest for both policymakers and academic researchers.Consistent with government efforts to promote standardization nationwide, the academic literature has long examined the economic impacts of firm-level standardization and widely recognizes the substantial value that standardization can create. However, prior research has largely focused on how a firm’s own standardization activities shape its internal outcomes, leaving the supply-chain spillover effects of standard-setting underexplored. To address this gap, this study constructs a supplier-customer-year micro-level panel dataset from 2008 to 2020 by integrating listed firms’ top-five supplier information with national tax survey data. We systematically investigate the impact of customer standardization activities on supplier innovation and uncover the mechanisms through which standardization enhances innovation in supply chain networks. Our findings reveal that customer standardization significantly improves suppliers’ innovation performance. Mechanism analyses reveal that this effect operates through two primary pathways: an innovation chain-centered on knowledge sharing and technology diffusion-and a product chain-underpinned by demand pull and relationship-specific investments. Heterogeneity analyses further indicate that the innovation-enhancing effect of customer standardization is more pronounced when supplier-customer relationships are less embedded, when customers’ innovation information is less transparent, or when customers occupy stronger competitive positions in their industries. Additionally, customer standardization has a stronger stimulative effect on suppliers in non-high-technology industries and industries characterized by high contract intensity. Finally, we find that the innovation-enhancing effect is driven mainly by the adoption of more authoritative national standards and more flexible group standards. This study makes three principal contributions to the literature. First, it expands the research boundary of the economic impacts of standardization by introducing a supply-chain spillover perspective. By extending the analytical lens beyond the focal firm to the broader supply chain network, this study enriches the theoretical and empirical foundations of the economics of standards and offers a network-based perspective for understanding the value implications of standardization. Second, rooted in China’s standard-setting practices, the study deepens theoretical understandings of supply chain governance and knowledge spillovers. Drawing on knowledge spillover theory and asset specificity theory, we articulate two mechanism pathways-innovation chain and product chain-and demonstrate that standardization plays a fundamental role in governing high asset-specific relationships and facilitating knowledge transmission in supply networks. This provides new theoretical insights for research on supply chain coordination and governance. Third, the study offers micro-level evidence and actionable pathways to support the use of standards as instruments for industrial upgrading. The findings have important theoretical and policy implications for government efforts to strengthen industrial linkages and foster new productive capacities through standard innovation, as well as for enterprises seeking to optimize supply chain management through standardization strategies.
