Research Objectives: We measure the number of production stages that reflect the degree of production segmentation, which characterizes the division of labor in the Global Value Chains (GVCs), and further verify its micro effect and mechanism on firms' markups. Research Methods: We use the DLW method to measure firms' markups, design a fixed-effect model to analyze the impact of the GVCs division of labor on it, and construct an IV to alleviate endogenous problems. Research Findings: The participation of enterprises in the global production segmentation, international production segmentation and domestic production segmentation has significantly increased firms' markups. Global production segmentation has significantly increased the markups of low-productivity, high-tech, and private enterprises, especially low-productivity enterprises participating in international production segmentation, and high-tech enterprises participating in domestic production segmentation. The production segmentation partly offsets the low markups caused by the “competitive effect” of export and domestic companies. In addition, “technical progress effect” and “transaction cost effect” are two possible channels for production segmentation to increase the firms' markups. Research Innovations: This paper enriches and expands the literature of GVCs division of labor influencing firms' markups. We analyze the robustness from the perspective of firm heterogeneity, industry technical heterogeneity and structural perspective, and verify the impact mechanism through the intermediary effect model. Research Value: These important findings have important implications for cracking down on the “Low Markups Trap” and improving GVCs of firms.
